about this workshop
Tatreez + The Art of Resistance is an introduction to Palestinian resistance through the art of Tatreez, led by Brooklyn-based Palestinian-American artist Sam Sundos. This beginner level course will educate students not only on the craft but also on its origins, focusing on the history of its use as a form of resistance against occupying forces. In this 2 hour course, students will be provided with a Aida cloth, tapestry needles, thread and 2 motifs, as well as a translation of various other motifs for those looking to dive deeper into this resilient craft. Through the lens of Palestinian resistance and storytelling, students will walk away with a greater understanding of not only a new skill but of a people’s fight for liberation.
This workshop includes a limited-edition SkatePal x Sabri collaborative tote bag that participants will embroider their motifs directly on.

SkatePal is a non-profit organisation supporting communities throughout Palestine, promoting the social, health and wellbeing benefits of skateboarding to enhance the lives of local youth.
since 2013, their ongoing presence and award-winning projects have reached hundreds of young people across the West Bank and won recognition from supporters around the world. they work with communities affected by the ongoing conflict, through building skateparks, providing equipment, running skateboarding classes, art and sustainability workshops.
why Palestine? more than half of all Palestinians living in the occupied territories are under 21 years old. yet for many young people across the West Bank and Gaza, cultural, educational and sporting opportunities are severely limited.
why skateboarding? skateboarding has the potential to dissolve barriers between class, race, age and gender. it isn’t hierarchical - it doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or a professional, a child or an adult. skateboarding is fun!
